Edith Mary Simonson (Hagborg)

Edith Mary Simonson (Hagborg)

Passed on

April 28, 1936 – September 28, 2026

Peacefully on September 28, 2026 with family by her side Edie passed away at Middlechurch Care Home at the age of 90 years.

Left with many wonderful memories are her daughters Carol (Tommy) and Donna (Wes), grandchildren Scott (Jenilee) and great grandsons Beck and Brody; Heather (Chris) and great grandson Ryder; Nelson; and Joel (Kylee) and great grandchildren Loudon and Maeve.

She is also survived by her sister Elaine & brother- in-law Larry, sisters-in-law Peggy Simonson, Betty Simonson, Beth McLeod and brother-in-law Ted Simonson.

She was predeceased by Carl – her husband of 68 years in 2023, parents Harry and May Hagborg, in laws Torger and Martha Simonson. Predeceased also by her brother Walter and sister-in-law Isla, brothers-in-law – Gordon, Doug, Gary, Lloyd, sisters-in-law Viola, Astrid and Dorothy. She was a favorite Aunty Edie to many nieces and nephews.

She grew up in Meadows on the family farm, daughter of Harry and May Hagborg, the eldest of the 3 children. She attended high school in Winnipeg at Tec Voc as there was no rural school to attend at that time and stayed with her Aunt Lil on Victor St.

Carl and Edie were married in 1954, and enjoyed a full life with family, friends and neighbours. They started married life in Winnipeg and eventually, when Carol and Donna were yearning for a country life with horses that they dreamed of, the move was made to Meadows. They purchased Edie’s Uncle Victor and Aunt Bessie Hagborg’s farm. Living a few years with her parents Harry & May Hagborg was a positive & memorable time for the entire family. ‘Happy hour’ was very popular when 4 adults live under the same roof. There was much time spent together and a great learning opportunity to see what farming looks like for the girls. When the new house was finished the family moved in and soon had a barn full of horses, calves, turkeys and chickens. Edie returned to Manitoba Hydro and took a job at Dorsey Station in Rosser where eventually both Carol and Donna took jobs and started their long careers. They later built a new home in Grosse Isle and spent many years there. Their final home together was in Rotary Towers in Gimli. As age and declining health caught up to them, in 2022 Carl was moved to Deer Lodge Centre and Edie to the Westhaven in Winnipeg. Edie enjoyed the friendships she made at the Westhaven. In the summer of 2025, Edie made her final move, to Middlechurch Home in West St. Paul.

Edie loved being a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and was always so proud to be the dessert queen of the family. For every gathering in memory, she would bring dessert and not just something easy, something extravagant and special. Everyone looked forward to her extravaganza of chocolate, whipped cream, shaved chocolate, cool whip masterpiece or some new recipe of deliciousness. Special requests would at times include a cherry pie for Heather, and chocolate chip cookies for the grandsons.

Edie had many gifts to share with the world but none more special than her gift of music. From an early age competing in talent shows, Edie and her accordion traveled and entertained. She played in bands entertaining at old time dances, parties, seniors homes and family gatherings. She played in many bands – The Vasalunders – a band that entertained many Folkorama guests at the Swedish pavilion as well as many Meadows dances. Edie N the Boyz was a band that was created while in Coral Sands, Apache Junction, Arizona for the 12 years they were there. When a move to Gimli took place she found a spot with the Silvertones and then the Crazy Eight’s (Plus One). She cut her first CD while living in Gimli and these CDs are enjoyed by many of her friends and family that loved her music.

Edie loved to golf and was a multiple Women’s champion of the infamous Swedish Duffer’s Tournament. Of course she had no desire to golf for many years but when Carl spent so much time with his buddies golfing she figured she might just learn to golf too. To her surprise (and to Carls) she was a natural golfer.

Carl and Edie had a life very full of great friendships. Meadows friends, Grosse Isle friends, Gimli friends, for many years Arizona friends. They showed their girls the value of having friends and having fun.

Carl and Edie raised their daughters Carol and Donna in a home full of love and good cooking – Carl had some cooking skills too. All the family remembers Pa’s Ribs and were a special request at many dinners together. But that was always enjoyed with Edie’s buns and a special dessert.

Edie will be missed but her memory will go on. Gifts to her children and grandchildren will be forever treasured. Her dedication to her grandchildren’s sporting events will not be forgotten. Anyone that has her CD will tap a foot, enjoy the music and think of her. Rest easy and in peace Edie and know you were loved.

Her family will lay her ashes to rest next to Carl at a private family service at a later date.

Many thanks for the care and kindness she received at Westhaven, and at Middlechurch Home where all the staff were so very caring.

Donations in her memory can be made to Gimli New Horizons, Box 1821 Gimli, MB R0C1B0 or the Grosse Isle Heritage Site, Box 34, Grosse Isle, MB R0C1G0

We have so many great memories of your folks when they lived at Meadows and at Grosse Isle. We have camping memories with our kids and the Simonsons and Boonstra’s. And of course your Mom with a big smile and playing the accordion. She won first place playing on the cruise we shared with them. And of course golfing. It was such a hoot how we started golfing on the “cow pasture “ at Clear Lake. What fun! Both of your folks were such a big part of our lives for many years! We miss them both! Rest in peace!

Carol and family, Our condolences, so sorry to hear of your mother's passing. I travelled with your mom and dad on the Maritimes tour and we got to play some music around the campfire in Baddeck, N.S. Wonderful memories of a great couple and a great musician.

Carol and Donna, Our condolences on the loss of your Mom. I have so many memories of our younger years and our many adventures in your white VW beetle together, riding Honey, and just enjoying life in our teenage years. Your Mom & Dad always welcomed me into their home for a meal, when they probably wanted to send me home. I always felt welcome. I'll always cherish those times spent with your family.
