Ben Goertzen, aged 94, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 18^th, 2025 at Betel Home Foundation in Gimli.

Dad was a husband, a father, a grandfather, and a great-grandfather.  He is survived by three sons: Henry, Laurie, and Wesley; two daughters: Evie and Lynn; 15 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; one brother, George; and one sister, Frieda; many nieces, nephews, and friends.  

He was predeceased by his wife, Margaret; one son, Andy; several great-grandchildren; and by two brothers: Jake and Frank; one half-sister, Lizzie, and three sisters: Tina, Helen and Anne.

He was born to Jacob and Anna Goertzen of Osler, Saskatchewan, on November 29, 1930. He married Margaret Friesen on August 19, 1951. As a pioneer farmer, he became adept at making and fixing many of his own buildings, tools and equipment. In his lifetime, he must have driven a couple of million kilometres without an accident. He loved making music and meeting people. And he often remembered people’s names and where he’d met them.

Dad’s funeral will take place with a private burial at Stonewall Cemetery followed by a church service at New Life Church in Stonewall on July 26^th, 2025, at 2 p.m. Several of his grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.

The family is grateful to the staff at Gimli’s Betel Home Foundation for caring for our father during his last months. They balanced professional care with personal connection to make the facility a delight for him. The family is also thankful to the staff at Stonewall’s Stonewood Place where Dad spent several years in semi-independent living. Besides these institutions, there are many individuals who gave of their time and energy to demonstrate care for our father. We, his children, may have been told your name and may even have met you, but we do not know all Dad’s friends. You know who you are, and we say a sincere thanks; you made our father’s life more meaningful, and your self-sacrifice has a positive impact on this world.

February 15, 1959 – July 15, 2025

     After a three-year battle with cancer, the family is saddened to announce the passing of our treasured Lindy Gail Appleyard. Lindy passed away at home, with her husband Larry at her side, on the afternoon of July 15,2025.

     Left to mourn her passing are her husband of 45 years Larry, and sons Nevin (Madeleine) and Brett (Viktoria).  Also grieving her loss are her mother Lorraine Woods, brother Brad Woods (Laura), sister Patty Woods, brother Derek Woods, brother-in-law Wayne Appleyard (Cyndi), sister-in-law Ali Appleyard, and sister-in-law Darlene Appleyard. Lindy will also be missed by several nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends, who were very close to her and very much a part of her life.  

     Lindy was predeceased by her father Edwin Woods as well as brother-in-law Lyn Appleyard, brother-in-law Kevin Appleyard and brother-in-law Vernon Appleyard. Lindy was born in Swan River, Manitoba and moved to Stonewall with her family, at an early age. She received her early schooling in Stonewall, leading to several lifetime friendships. Upon graduating from high school, Lindy entered the University of Winnipeg on a scholarship.  After a year at university, Lindy decided to take some time off from schooling and worked at the Stonewall Argus, while also teaching figure skating at several communities in the Interlake.  Lindy married Larry on August 30, 1980, and together they made Stonewall home for the remainder of her life.  After marrying Larry, Lindy decided to return to university, attending the University of Winnipeg and the University of Manitoba, receiving her education degree. This led to employment at Stonewall Centennial school where she taught grade 6 for several years. In 1988 Lindy gave up her teaching career to focus on becoming the greatest mother she could be for her two sons, Nevin (1988) and Brett (1992). 

   Those who knew Lindy knew that if she was involved in any activity she was completely engaged and dedicated.  This included, but not limited to, teaching, coaching figure skating, speed skating volunteering, co-founding Stonewall Messy Church, and Sunday school teaching.  However, most of all, Lindy was a devoted wife, mother, sister and daughter who put the needs of family ahead of all things. Lindy loved family events, often hosting, and was sure to get people together for the annual family hockey draft.  Lindy lived life with purpose, passion, and an unwavering dedication to her loved ones. Her legacy of strength and kindness will continue to inspire us every day.      

    Lindy was so happy this past year to be well enough to attend the weddings of her two sons. Both Madeleine (Nevin) and Viktoria (Brett) were welcome additions to the family and Lindy felt she was blessed to be able to “pass the torch” with the greatest of confidence.

      Funeral service will be held at 1:00pm on Sunday, July 20^th at the Stonewall Anglican Church, 435 First Avenue South, Stonewall with reception to follow at the Stonewall Legion, 459 Main Street, Stonewall. The service is viewable on Zoom via a link from the Stonewall Anglican Church website. In lieu of flowers, should one desire, consider a donation to Cancer Care Manitoba, the Stonewall Anglican Church “raise the roof” fund, or a charity of one’s choice.  Also, consider a blood donation in Lindy’s memory.

   The family extends heartfelt thanks to the incredible team of care professionals and aides at Cancer Care Manitoba and the Stonewall hospital, who supported Lindy over the past several years. Their compassion, dedication and respect brought comfort and dignity in this difficult time, and we are deeply grateful for the care that they provided.  Also special thanks to Lindy’s family and close friends who provided much support and comfort during this difficult journey.  Thanks to Ken Loehmer of Ken Loehmer Funeral Services (204-886-0404) and Reverend James Bardsley for their care and compassion.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the accidental passing of our beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend at the age of 81, on July 14^th 2025, at the Asper Building in St. Boniface Manitoba.

Mimi is survived by her husband of 60 years, Claude. She is also survived by many loved grandchildren, great grandchildren, her children Johanne, Linda (Jim), Alain, Patrick and her youngest sister Denise.

Mimi was predeceased by her parents, 2 of her three sisters, Jeanette and Huguette and her brother Bob and many other family members.

Mimi was born in Montreal, Quebec on September 29^th, 1943 where she grew up, went to school and then met and married her husband of 6o years, and best friend of 66 years, Claude. They married on July 25^th, 1964, started a family and a long life together. Mimi loved to read, bake, many kinds of crafts and sewing. She was a very loving and caring woman, devoted wife, mother and friend. She always welcomed everyone with a smile. She will be deeply missed.

A celebration of Life will take place at the Baptist Church, Teulon on August 23, 2025 at 2:00 PM.

 Is with deep sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Carl Joseph Paulsen on July 10, 2025 at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre.

 He is survived by his wife Frances of 51 years, sister Shirley Dodds, brother Sidney Paulsen (Betty), children Lori (Peter) Harrison, Maureen Baskin & Ken Baskin, grandchildren: Kyle (Lizzy), Paul (Anna), Molly, Thomas, Kelsey (Gerrit) 4 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews and their families and many friends.

 He was predeceased by his parents, H.V.(Bill) and Eva Paulsen, sister Inez Hartle and husband Edwin, sister Bernice Duff and husband Leon, brother- in- law Derwood Dodds.

 Carl was born on January 4, 1937 in Birch Hills Saskatchewan. He attended Heatherdell School in Fenton, Saskatchewan. In 1955 he moved to Stonewall Manitoba with his parents and some of his siblings. He had a varied career working at the feedlot, delivering fuel and varied farm operations at the Stony Mountain Penitentiary Farm Annex. He played ball, curled, bowled and especially loved to ride horses. Carl and Fran made many happy memories with friends riding in the Spruce Woods. Hours were spent playing cards with family and friends, watching the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Winnipeg Jets.

 A Celebration of Life will be on Friday, August 15, 2025 at 1 pm at the Argyle Memorial Community Centre, Argyle Manitoba.

January 13, 1969 – July 9, 2025

Peacefully after his courageous battle with lung cancer Mark passed away with family by his side.

He leaves to mourn his passing, his partner Robin Heaps, his mother Judy Patterson, his sons; Sean Lussier, Joshua Patterson and T.J. Patterson, step-daughter Jayelle Heaps (Dylan Marks); sister Cheryl Patterson (Randy); 4 grandsons, Cruz, Wyatt, Luke and Jagger Marks. Nieces and nephews Ryan (Nick), Alexandria, Myles (Lily), each one of you held a special bond. Also many extended family.

Predeceased by his father Ted Patterson and step-son Dallas Hayka.

Born in Teulon and raised in Stonewall. Hobbies of Mark included hockey, quadding, bonfires and enjoying drinks with friends and family.

Mark was very proud to have obtained his security license in British Columbia. He returned to Manitoba in 2017 and he became one hell of a pizza chef.

Service of Remembrance will be held on Monday, July 21, 2025 at 1:00 pm at the Stonewall Legion. Everyone in attendance please consider yourself an honourary pallbearer.

 A private family burial will take place.

SHE WAS PREDECEASED BY HER FATHER FRED AND HER MOTHER DARLENE.

SHE GREW UP WITH A LOVE FOR HORSES, WHICH WITH STUCK WITH HER HER WHOLE LIFE.SHE SPENT COUNTLESS HOURS RIDING AND CARING FOR HORSES. SHE ALSO ENJOYED CRAFTING. HER EVEN BIGGER AND NUMBER ONE PASSION WAS SPENDING QUALITY TIME WITH HER FAMILY AND FRIENDS WHETHER IT WOULD BE SITTING ON THE DECK VISITING, AT THE LAKE, GOLFING, CAMPING, OR JUST HAVING A GOOD TIME. THERE WAS NOTHING SHE WOULDN’T DO FOR HER FAMILY.

CELEBRATION OF LIFE WILL BE HELD AT THE GUNTON MEMORIAL HALL JULY 5 FROM 2PM TO 4PM.

June 16, 1940 – June 20, 2025

It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Jessie Alberta Minaker at Rosewood Lodge in Stonewall, June 20, 2025 at the age of 85 years.

She is survived by her son Phillip Minaker of Toronto, and sister-in-law Janet Hagen.

She is predeceased by her parents Jean and Walter Minaker, and her favourite brother Jim.

Jessie grew up in Grosse Isle, eventually moving to the city. Jessie worked many different jobs in her lifetime within hospitality and retail. She worked at Major Quilting with her mother Jean until she retired. Upon retirement she started to work at the Marquette Café´with her good friend Helen Liebrecht, here she met many new friends. She loved to cook and bake.

Jessie was a dedicated community member, volunteering her time, supporting showers and community events at the Grosse Isle Hall. Jessie was the driving force behind canteen and catering services at the Grosse Isle Heritage Site, it was a very important part of her life. She became very involved and worked very hard. She also made many friends there. The new canteen at the Heritage site was named in her honour, Jessie’s Canteen, she was very humbled by this.

Jessie loved to travel, made numerous trips to Mazatlan, Mexico, Hawaii, and Cuba. She was very close with the Lizarraga family, Claudia, Victor, Ingrid, Abril and Alex and families. They held a very special place in her heart.

Special thank you to everyone who visited with Jessie this last year, she enjoyed everyone’s company. She made some special friends in Teulon Hospital, and I know they will miss her.

Special thank you to Staff at Stonewall Hospital, Teulon Hospital, and Rosewood Lodge for the care and compassion shown to her. When she arrived at Rosewood Lodge from Teulon Hospital on June 14, 2025, she felt she was at home.

At Jessie’s request there will be no funeral service, cremation has taken place and internment will take place at a future date.

December 1, 1946 – June 19, 2025

It with deep sorrow and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Margaret on June 19, 2025, peacefully at home.  Lovingly remembered by daughter Karmelle, son Kristopher (Kelly), sisters Kathleen Biloki and Valerie McHale (Ian).  Mom is also survived by many nieces and nephews of whom she was very fond.

Margaret was predeceased by her father Alfred Maxwell in 1973, mother Emily in 1980, husband Jim in 2018, brother-in-law Merlyn in 2020, and her sister Irene in 2023.

Mom was born in Northwich, Cheshire England on December 1, 1946.  She came to Canada with her family in June 1949.  They settled on a farm west of Gunton. She attended Gunton Elementary School and Teulon Collegiate Institute.  After leaving high school, she acquired a job as a telephone operator with the Manitoba Telephone System in Winnipeg from 1964 to 1967.

In June of 1967 she married Jim Medwid and moved to the Medwid farm south of Balmoral where she lived until her passing. In 1972 she was blessed with daughter Karmelle and in 1976, son Kristopher.

In 1968 she acquired a position as receptionist for Drs. Beryl & Maurice Bishop at Hunter Memorial Hospital where she worked until 1976.  In 1978 she decided to pursue a career in nursing. At that time Karmelle was 5 and Kristopher 2.  During her training she had the support of her family who had to sacrifice a lot for her to succeed and she graduated from the Grace General Hospital in Winnipeg in June of 1980.

Mom acquired a job as a general duty RN at the Teulon Hunter Memorial Hospital, a small but very active rural hospital at that time.  She gained valuable experience in the ER, OR, L&D, and pediatrics.

From 1980-1989 she worked day and night rotation as she wanted to attend all of our baseball, hockey and ringette games in the evenings.

In 1989 she obtained her Nursing Administration in the Health Care System from the University of Manitoba.

From 1989-1991 she filled two term positions as case coordinator for  home care, covering the Teulon and Fisher Branch areas followed by the Stonewall, St Laurent and Lundar areas. During this time, she identified the need for a Teulon Handivan and in 1991, with the help of councillor Bill Docking & Teulon Hospital Foundation the first Teulon Handivan was purchased.

In 1991, she returned to Hunter Memorial Hospital as head nurse, later moving into the Director of Nursing position.  From 1991-1997 Mom taught the Teulon Volunteer Ambulance crew in the evening once a week.

In 1998 regionalization took place, the end of the era of Director of Nursing in one facility.  She became the Clinical Team Manager over Teulon and Stonewall Hospitals until her retirement in 2016.

Community, family and friends were very important to Mom.  She was a member of the Balmoral Rec Center Board, the Teulon & District Handivan Committee and the Southwest Palliative Care Committee.

Mom loved having friends over for lunch and afternoon tea.  She also looked forward to hosting traditional family gatherings. Family and friends were extremely important to her.  They were all so very supportive.

Mom also had a very strong faith all her life.  In later years she was a member of the Stonewall Anglican Church.  She belonged to the choir and was a member of vestry.

The family would like to thank Michelle, Michaela, Jennifer and Elissa. Also thanks to Janet Haley and Maureen Tully for all their support when Mom’s health started to fail.

Funeral service will be held on, Monday, July 7, at 11:00 AM in the Anglican Church of Ascension, Stonewall.  Lunch to follow at the Stonewall Legion, followed by a private interment at Stonewall Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to Teulon & District Handivan or the Southwest Palliative Care Committee.
