Sandy Skinner

February 19, 1944 – November 25, 2022    It is with very heavy hearts that the family of Sandy Skinner announces her passing on November 25, 2022, at home and surrounded by her children. Sandy’s struggles with cancer are now over, and she is peacefully at rest, along with her beloved husband, Johnny Skinner, and other loved ones who have predeceased her.

The great love and priority in Sandy’s life, was always her John Boy and their children. She was an amazing wife and mother, supporting them in every possible way, while pursuing her own career as an early childhood educator. She loved their life on the farm. She was always awed by the natural beauty of her surroundings – gardens, flowers, plants, birds, animals, blue skies, sunrises, sunsets, and especially fields of grain.

Sandy instilled in us a love of family and she exemplified the golden rule. Her generosity of spirit was an integral part of her very being. When she was only 3 years old, she gave away her favorite doll to another little girl who had nothing, and said “You have this, it’s okay, my Mom will get me another one” – all the while knowing that was unlikely to happen.

Sandy’s always shown an unconditional love of all children. She saw herself as one of the luckiest Moms ever to her 4 loving children – Jennifer (Jason), Rod (Kim), Scott (Angele), Sherry Lynne (Mike). Her pride and joy knew no bounds with her 8 grandchildren –McKay and Matty, Lachlan and Lilly, Olivia and Abby, Brianne and Austin. She also leaves behind her sister, Sherry (Terry), and brother, Curtis (June). Sandy was predeceased by her Mom and Dad (Marg and Stan Charison), and sister Linda (Fred). She will be sadly missed, but her memory will be honoured forever by her extended family of aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Everyone who knew Sandy will remember her as being a great inspiration to everyone around her. Her kindness and the gentle and caring way she lived her life, with humility and grace, were her defining attributes.

A special thank you to Sandy’s medical team who saw her through many health issues. Sandy requested there not be a funeral service. Anyone wishing to send an online tribute or make a donation to any local charity or children’s group in her honour is welcome to do so.

Ed de Laroque

It is with the most profound sadness that we announce the passing of our Dad, Husband and Legend, Ed de Laroque.

Ed was born September 28, 1970 to Charlie and Lynda de Laroque and was raised just outside of Argyle, Manitoba. Ed played hockey in his younger years into his 20’s and football in his teenage years. He married Kim Petrie in 1995 and together they built a life and raised 4 amazing kids.

Ed was the heart and soul of Warren Tire. He worked for his parents until 2006, when he and Kim bought the business and took the reins. There wasn’t anything Ed couldn’t do or figure out. Even in most recent times when staffing was short and times were getting tough, he did not quit, he did not give up. Ed was the hardest working man we will ever know.

Ed was a born coach, mentor and leader. Once his children started playing sports, he was all in. He coached hockey, football and baseball, and many of his teams won countless championships. He was his kid’s biggest fan, cheering them on in all their activities from motocross to Air Cadets, hockey, football, baseball and Irish Dance. Ed loved his kids so much, and was so proud of them.

When he wasn’t coaching, he was hunting or fishing. Ed gave his children the gift of his knowledge and love of the outdoors. Many July long weekends were spent hauling in pickerel at Grand Rapids or on the Red reeling in the cats. He taught all four of them how to hunt and fish, and was so proud when they were successful.

Ed loved to travel. Besides many hunting and fishing trips, Ed loved to travel to Mexico, Cuba, the Dominican, the West Coast, day trips throughout Manitoba, trips to US for football games or a simple trip on the side by side to Inwood for some lunch.

Ed loved his family and friends very deeply. Ed’s friends meant the world to him. While he might not have been a man of words, you always knew he loved you through his actions. Ed was very thoughtful, and had a soft side that he only showed to the people closest to him.

He will be terribly missed by his wife Kim, his children Dylan (Rachel), Austin, Ciarra and Brady, his parents Charlie and Lynda de Laroque, his brother and sister and their families, his nephews, Kim’s family and his nieces, and of course all the friends he loved.

Honourary Pallbearers are Scott Fisher, Mike Tataryn, Jamie Puffalt, Jamie Gray, Stan Grassinger, Donnie de Laroque, Ray Blowers and Corkie Allarie.

A service will be held Monday, December 5, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. in the Stonewall Legion, 459 Main Street, Stonewall Manitoba. A come and go reception until 4 p.m. will follow, for those who don’t make it in to the service.

We would like to thank Colleen and Tyson Langrell, the EMT’s, Headingly RCMP, and the nurses and doctor at Stonewall Hospital for everything they did for us that morning.

In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to the Manitoba Wildlife Federation, for a memorial youth hunt in Ed’s name.

Our promise to you Ed, we will fight, we will survive, we will live life in your honour, we won’t quit, we won’t give up, and you will always be with us.

Marion Joyce Snell (nee Napper)

December 26, 1927 – November 12, 2022     Mom passed away peacefully at the Teulon long term care facility, just a month short of her 95th birthday.

She was predeceased by her husband, Lloyd in 2011, and her daughter Linda.

Left to cherish her memory are her sons Bob, Ken (Francine), Russ (Laura); and daughters Tracy (Todd) and Bev (Ken); grandchildren Shelly (Ryan), David (Christy), Amanda (Curtis), Mark, Nadine (Brendon), William (Nadine), Joseph (Ashley) and great grandchildren Charleigh and Oliver, plus nieces & nephews.

Born in Foxwarren, but with moves to Tilston, Lake Francis and Argyle; mom completed her grade 11 at Brant Consolidated School. Mom’s parents, Will & Myrtle Napper purchased the Wolson’s Store in 1945 and it was there that she met her future husband, J. Lloyd Snell, marrying February 6, 1948.

Initially farming, and shipping milk; dad then got a position with Bristol Aerospace in 1957 and CAE in 1960 with an opportunity to move to Puntzi, BC. Mom loved travelling and the adventure appealed to her. So off they went, with four of their children in tow. They returned to Argyle in 1963 and their youngest child, Beverly was born in November of that year.

Mom was a great community supporter, quietly taking on the roles of Ladies Curling Club president, Hall Board member, Fall Supper volunteer, Sports days volunteer, Baseball coach, Argyle Shuffling Club president and Treasurer of the Stonewall Area Band, of which she had a part in getting organized in the early 70’s.

Music was mom’s passion. She could play piano by ear, in the dark! Hum her a few bars of a tune, and she could play the entire piece! It was magical and her toes were tapping to dance tunes until the very end. To raise money for the new curling rink, she made a big pot of vegetable soup to serve to the twenty mile walk-a-thon’ers, and participated in a 24 hr. piano-a-thon playing her turn of 8 hrs. nonstop.

Mom & Dad did quite a bit of travelling, loving to explore Canada, and mom navigated all their trips, taking travel notes along the way. You could never beat her at geography matches! She continued her writing and added in stories about their life. Writing, geography, and history came in handy when she volunteered to help compile the local history book – Hands Across the Meridian. She spent countless hours interviewing seniors, and helping them by writing their histories, taking dictation over the phone for them if they couldn’t write any longer.

Mom was such a hard working, country woman. She never allowed produce to go to waste. She managed our large gardens and put up many quarts of vegetables & fruits, juices, jams and jellies, and pickles. With dad being a hunter, we always had tasty food on hand. Mom was a great baker as well. Our lunches held at least one baked good; pies, cookies, cakes, or dainties. It was a testament to her good baking, that our lunches got stolen in high school!

Mom was a sewer too. Not only did she make some of our clothes, but she sewed an entire tent, for a pop-up trailer! We enjoyed a few summers at the lake or travelling to BC using that trailer. She also sewed us costumes for the winter carnivals. And with her sense of humor, sometimes showed up in costume herself, and without us knowing who she was!

We’ll miss you mom.

We’d like to thank Ken Lohmer for his services and Dr. Loudon and the staff at the Teulon hospital for their compassionate care over the last 16 months.

A private family service was held per mom’s wishes. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to your local charity of choice.

Beatrice McMahon (nee Sanderson)

May 17, 1938 – October 25, 2022      With deep sadness, the family of Bea McMahon announces her passing.

Bea’s childhood was spent on the Shoal Lake farm as the eldest of 10 siblings. When she moved to Teulon, she met and married Bill McMahon. Over the course of 64 years, they raised their 4 daughters, and became part of Teulon’s history by owning and operating Bill and Bea’s Variety Store for 35 years. Bill and Bea were due to celebrate their 65th wedding anniversary this December.

Mom was a member of the Teulon United Church for 60 years. She loved going to church and singing in the choir. Mom loved fiddle and country music. She taught herself to play the 12-string guitar, and even sang and played on the Western Hour! Mom had a beautiful voice and loved singing, right up until the end.

One of Mom and Dad’s favourite past-times was harness racing. They owned and trained several race horses and spent a lot of time at Assiniboia Downs and summer fairs. They were also able to partake in some international travel. Mom loved watching baseball, playing bingo, horseshoes, and was an avid curler. One of her favourite games was crib – she loved playing it and often came home from local tournaments with the skunk trophy, which she would proudly show off and laugh!

Mom struggled with bipolar disorder for most of her adult life, but was finally able to enjoy stable mental health in her senior years. When it became too difficult for her to manage at home, Mom moved into Goodwin Lodge, where she received wonderful care. Our family is so grateful to all the staff at Goodwin for their care and compassion, especially as Mom’s dementia progressed. Even as her memory continued to decline, we could still see the essence of our mom, through her singing and laughing, and her brilliant smile that would light up a room!

Bea leaves behind to mourn, her husband Bill, daughters Kathy, Donna (Chuck), Melody (Darrell), Crystal (Todd), grandchildren Todd, Samantha, Kyla, Sharlene, Shannon, Megan, Michael, Brittany, and their families. She also leaves her siblings, Esther, Denise, Bernice, Art, Eileen, sister-in-law Shirley, brother-in-law Abe, and their families, plus many nieces, nephews and cousins. A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to Goodwin Lodge or Teulon Community Health Foundation.
