Lorna Jean Baker (Appleyard)

Feb. 4, 1959- Sept. 13, 2019      Courageously, after a brief battle with pancreatic cancer our mom, wife and Grandma, Lorna passed away at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre. Mom is survived by her husband of 39 years, Dale; her 3 children Roberta, Patricia (Travis), and Michael (Marie-France); and her 4 grandchildren Eden, Abigail, Allison and Jameson. She is also survived by her brother Glenn (Valerie) and her sister Linda (David); Dale’s siblings Chris (Netty), Wade (Joyce), Barry, Jackie (Martin) and Colleen (Scott); countless nieces, nephews and many dear friends. Lorna was predeceased by her parents Bob and Doreen Appleyard, her father and mother-in-law Bill and Alice Baker, and her brother and sister-in-law Allan and Kathy Appleyard. Mom was born at the Stonewall Hospital on February 4, 1959. She attended elementary school in Balmoral and high school in Stonewall where she met our Dad, Dale. Mom and Dad were married on September 13, 1980. After living in Stony Mountain for 10 years they settled in Balmoral at their current residence in October of 1990. This is where we were raised and now where her 4 grandchildren will continue to make more memories and be constantly be reminded of their Grandma. Mom spent our early years being a stay-at-home mom and then started working at Ducks Unlimited Canada where she worked for 20 years and made many lifelong friends. She was very involved and very proud to be on the Harlequins and multiple other fundraising committees for Ducks. Mom shared her love of curling, line dancing, and country music with us. We spent many a morning dancing around the living room with her. As we grew older, our friends started calling her Mom or Mama Baker and she always made sure there was extra food at the table just in case someone dropped in. She frequently referred to our friends as her other children and was proud of all of them. Mom was also very proud of all of her nieces and nephews and was so close to them that even their friends also called her Auntie Lorna. We would like to send a huge thank you to Roberta’s Medicine Family and Dr. Alexander at the SRHC who went above and beyond and took such amazing care of her in her final week. Also to Dr. Loudon, Marcia at CancerNav, and to everyone who has helped with the grandkids, our dogs and helped keep Mom’s life as comfortable and positive as possible. A celebration of Mom’s life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion in Stonewall on Friday, September 20, 2019 at 2:00 pm. A private internment will take place at a later date. Ronald James Hepples

October 25th 1936- August 12th 2019    Surrounded by love, Ron Hepples passed away at the Stonewall Hospital, with family by his side. He is survived by his three children, 7 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren. He was pre-deceased by his loving wife, Patricia Hepples in 2007. Ron was born and raised in the North End of Winnipeg where, at 13, he met the love of his life, Pat. They married in 1955 and settled in North Kildonan where they raised their 3 children: Cam, Donald and Janice. Fond memories were on Strood Avenue where they kept and rode horses. During the winter months, Dad made a skating rink in the yard which became a gathering place for kids in the neighbourhood. While on Strood, land was purchased in Teulon, MB in the 60’s. It was there where Ron built his lifetime dream, “The Ranch”, where many fun-filled weekends were shared with close family friends. Everyone enjoyed the pot luck suppers, Saturday night rummoli games, horseback riding, swimming, shooting, sporting games, snowmobiling and countless nights around the campfire. In the later 70’s Ron and Pat made “The Ranch” their permanent home by building a cedar log home. In 2001, they moved to Stonewall, where they resided till their passing. While there, Dad enjoyed spending his time at the Legion. He enjoyed morning coffee with the boys, and in the afternoons; solving world issues at the B.S. table over a beer. We would like to thank the staff at the Stonewall Hospital for their compassionate care during the last three months of Dad’s life where they helped him maintain his “97.5” life rating as best as they could. A special thanks to everyone who helped Ron though this difficult time. At Ron’s request, there will not be a service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Stonewall Palliative Care.

Following their retirement, Bill and Marg enjoyed travelling to Europe, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, mainland U.S.A. and Alaska before settling down to winters in Pine to Palm Resort Park in Weslaco, Texas. It was here that Marg spent 30 wonderful winters, continuing to enjoy leadership roles in the Tourist Club, Shuffleboard Club and as the creator of the Park Directory. Her passions until the end were countless hours spent on the computer doing research and making greeting cards and photo calendars, knitting, jigsaw puzzles, playing cards, doing Sudoku and watching curling on television. Her greatest joys, though, were her grandchildren and great-grandsons whom she regaled often in her final hours.
