During most of his working years he was employed by Bulman Brothers. He was a very social person and enjoyed talking with anyone and everyone. Our parents loved animals, and in particular labrador retrievers and stray cats which at times were too many to count. As a result, flowers are gratefully declined with donations to the Winnipeg Humane Society being appreciated. A private funeral will be held at a later date with interment to follow in Stony Mountain. The family thanks the staff of Rosewood Lodge and Teulon Hospital who took such great care of him over the past 3 years. He considered you his extended family.

Nettie (Ron) Simcoe

5 July 1941 – 9 August 2018

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Nettie on 9 Aug 2018. It is a comfort for us to know that Nettie is now at peace with her beloved son Perry. Left to cherish her memory is her loving husband Fred, daughter Rosemary (Kendall), sons Bruce (Mona) and Dale (Lori), grandchildren Nicholas (Kathleen), Jamie (Brett), Derek, Joshua, Emily (Jordan), and Sarah. As well as her great granddaughter Amelia. Nettie was born and raised in Preeceville, Saskatchewan. She moved to Winnipeg in her 20’s where she worked at Ray-o-vac. This is where she met the love of her life Fred. They recently celebrated their 53rd wedding anniversary. Nettie was an accomplished seamstress. Many young brides and bridesmaids wore her designs. She loved to sew new outfits for herself in her younger years. Nettie had a love of art. Her work is displayed throughout her house for us to remember her by. She was very proud of the Key to the Town of Teulon she received for her art work, which was chosen from the Teulon Agricultural Fair. Her love of the outdoors and gardening showed in the summer with her lovely flower beds. A loving mother and homemaker, Nettie was a remarkable cook and enjoyed preparing meals for her family and friends, most especially over the holidays. Cooking meals for her boys was a joy for her. Nettie was a wonderful Baker. Her homemade donuts and pies were a favorite. Nettie loved to spend her evenings in the local Bingo parlors challenging the odds and winning the occasional jackpot. She was also very competitive when it came to cards. Canasta or King Pedro were favorites playing into the wee hours of the morning. She was also always good for a conversation in the shop, making you laugh at her stories. Many stories were about her heavy foot and wanting to own that fast sports car. We wish to thank the staff at Goodwin Lodge for the special care that she received. Thank you also to Father Chorney and Father Chuckry for their pastoral care. We would like to invite family and friends to celebrate her life with us. Funeral service will be held on Wednesday 15 August at 10:30 at the Komarno Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the Komarno Holy Trinity Ukrainian Catholic Cemetery. A light lunch will be served after at the Komarno Hall to visit and share stories with Fred and family of Nettie’s life. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Manitoba Down Syndrome Society. This an organization that provides support, information and opportunities for individuals with Down syndrome, parents, professionals and other interested persons. Nettie’s son Perry was gifted with Down Syndrome and she would be proud to help support other families through this non-profit organization which is operated by volunteers.

On July 19th, 2018 Brian passed away peacefully in his home with his family by his side. Brian is survived by his wife Beverly, mother Anne, sister Donna (Ken), daughters Jackie (Doug), Val (Cory), Mary (Darren) and Karen (Jeff). He will be sadly missed by his grandchildren whom he cherished: Gavin (Manvir), Justine (Ryley), Breanna, Chaz, Emily, Sam, Alex, Jayden and Graeme. He had a special place in his heart for his nieces Kendall, Brindley, Jill and nephew Carl. Not forgotten and loved is Alice (step mother-in-law), and brother-in-law Cliff (Judith). Brian is predeceased by his father Ken and Bev’s parents Allan and Anne. Dad appreciated the simple things life has to offer. He loved time spent with family and friends. As his time drew near he said to us “all that is left are the memories”. Dad had a huge appreciation for the outdoors and spent summers camping while raising his family. He was an avid fisherman and loved the solitude at his cabin at Wekusko. He was known for his “buying and selling” over the years and he acquired some treasured antiques. Dad and mom spent every day together looking for new adventures. They spent many hours on a motorcycle and winters were spent in Yuma, Arizona playing with friends in the dessert and enjoying the sun. He enjoyed travelling with mom, visiting quaint places and meeting interesting people along the way. Many close friends were made over the years and their support during this difficult time has been appreciated. He was a wonderful dad and raised his daughters to work hard, be mindful, respectful and kind. Family was his priority and he loved our mom dearly. Before he passed he said to her… “In case I miss you, know I love you and think of me often”. We will never forget you dad and will love you always. Cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held. A private family interment will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or to Cancer Care Manitoba in Brian’s name.

FRANK VAN KEMENADE

October 29, 1922 – July 8, 2018     It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Frank van Kemenade, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. Frank passed away peacefully on July 8, 2018, aged 95, at Rosewood Lodge Personal Care Home in Stonewall. Frank was born to Peter and Maria van Kemenade on a small farm near Eindhoven, The Netherlands, in October 1922, the third of six children. As a child growing up in Europe between the wars Frank kept rabbits. pigeons, and sheep and his love of farming was born. As a teenager he became involved with a local Young Farmers Club and attended agricultural college. All that remained was to buy a farm but in those difficult years that was a virtual impossibility because of the lack of land available in Holland at that time. In the late 1940s Frank met his future wife Christine and together they began a long and fruitful life together that would last more than 60 years. Together they planned a new life away from post-war Europe where they could realize Frank’s dream of farming. In March of 1954 that dream was fulfilled when they emigrated to Canada, arriving with two small children and another on the way. Life in Canada was hard to begin with. Frank began work on a mink farm in Stony Mountain and it took two years before he was able to afford a shared purchase of 60 acres of land near Stonewall with another immigrant family. It took years of toil, working construction jobs alongside the farm work, keeping minks, chickens, and later dairy cattle, but eventually the family, now with five children, were able to move up and in 1967 purchased a larger dairy farm near Grosse Isle. All of the hard work paid off and the farm was a success. In 1982, after selling the farm to son Bernie, Frank and Christine were able to retire and so began the final chapter of their lives. They became snow birds and spent contented winters in Arizona alongside many old and new friends. Back in Canada they saw their own kids become parents and rejoiced in their new role as Opa and Oma. They loved to visit with the good friends they made in Canada and started to return to Holland to visit family and friends there. During his entire life, Frank was actively involved in the Catholic church, supporting his fellow parishioners and local community and helping others whenever he could. Trustworthy, loyal, honest, hardworking, family orientated, these terms describe Frank. The world is a poorer place without him. May God rest his soul. Frank was pre-deceased by his loving wife Christine in March 2014. He leaves to mourn his passing, sons Peter (Pam), Bernie (Sharon), Willy (Cathie), Leon (Gracie), and daughter Marilyn (Randy). Also left to mourn their Opa are grandchildren Kim and Kelly, Rhys, Lane, and Burke, Saskia and Christian, Jennifer, and great-grandchildren Jake, Madden, Beck, and Hayden. The family would like to thank all the staff at Rosewood Lodge Personal Care Home and the Stonewall Health Care Center as well as the Home Care staff at Lions Manor for the care given to Frank in the final months. A private family mass and interment will take place at a later date.
