Donald Butcher

Passed on July 28, 2021

With great sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of Don Butcher on July 28, 2021 at age 86. Dad was predeceased by his beloved wife Dianne (nee Staveley) and son Ward.

Mourning his passing are his loving partner Irene Corrigal and her children Rick (Ardelle), Wendy, Terry (Kathy) and Bonnie and their families, daughter Joanne Gordon and son-in-law Rob, grandsons Devon (Chantelle Bethge) and Reilly Gordon, Harlan Butcher (Mom Janna Butcher), and Rick Nelson (Chelsea, Damian and Ryder, and Jazmyn) as well as sisters-in-law Bev Butcher and Norrene Evans (Kelvin Palmer) and their families.

Dad grew up in West Kildonan with his brother Bert and sister Patricia, enjoying many sports including soccer, hockey and curling. Dad and Mom were married May 16, 1959 and the births of Ward and Joanne completed our family. He worked as a salesman which took us to Saskatoon and Calgary. Many great memories were made camping and fishing, especially at our spot at Wakaw Lake. Dad enjoyed hunting ducks and geese, with his labrador retriever Duffy and often his pal Charlie Street.

After moving back to Winnipeg in 1975, many happy times were spent at the family cottage at Petersfield before buying a cottage of our own at 35 Pine in Matlock. Mom and Dad enjoyed great times with family and friends and a few trips to Mexico. Dad started golfing, often with his dear friend Gary Hares with whom he had many fun times on and off the course. Gary and his wife Beverly were a great support to Dad after Mom’s untimely passing in 1992.

Ward and I were very happy when Dad met Irene as she brought happiness back into his life, and I am forever grateful. Together they enjoyed golfing, travel and spending time with the grandsons and watching them grow up.

About 7 years ago Dad started showing signs of dementia and moved in with Irene in Teulon. His health continued to fail and without Irene’s loving care and infinite patience he would have had to be moved to a care home. Ward’s death in 2017 was a further blow to Dad from which he never seemed to recover.

A celebration of Dad’s life will be held Thursday August 12 from 2-6 PM in the Tache Room of the Norwood Hotel at 112 Marion Street. We respectfully request that only fully vaccinated people attend.

A private graveside service at Kildonan Presbyterian Cemetery will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Humane Society or Bruce Oakes Recovery Centre.
