Freida Jorheim
Obituary
Passed on
1931-2026
It is with great sadness that the family announces the passing of Freida Jorheim on October 20, 2026 at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre.
Left to cherish her memory are her children Alvin, Heather (Rob) and Marilyn (Murrey) and her grandchildren Alex, Jacob (Shayla) and Matthew, along with her sisters-in-law Vivian, Margy, Alma and Violet, and numerous nieces, nephews and their families.
She was predeceased by her father John in 1939, mother Flossie in 1997, husband Bert in 1993 and two infant children. She was also predeceased by her siblings Florence, Donald, Russell, Buddy, Arthur, and Sylvia.
Freida was born on the family farm on May 11, 1931. Despite growing up during the Depression, she had many fond memories of those early years. Her education began in nearby Rondeau School, where she later taught and then worked diligently to preserve and maintain after the school was closed. She was also the driving force behind the annual Rondeau picnic. She went on to Tuxedo Normal School in Winnipeg to obtain her teaching certificate and taught for a number of years.
She married Bert in 1954 and they settled on a farm together near Inwood to build their family. As her children grew, she became involved in the Home and School Association, the Figure Skating Club and the 4H Club. Her connection to Inwood School through substituting and volunteering led to her meaningful 32-year career as a Child Development Worker in the Teulon Day Care and throughout the Interlake. The impact of her work was evident, as many of the children she worked with would reconnect with her as they became adults.
Freida’s involvement in numerous projects and her service with many community organizations continued throughout her life. This dedication led to her receiving the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2013, and the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for historical preservation in 2014.
Freida loved spending time with friends and family, and was especially proud of her grandchildren, involving them in many of the activities she enjoyed – working in the garden, picking berries, baking, canning, playing cards with friends and going to old-time dances.
At the age of 70, Freida purchased a computer and wrote her mother’s story, which has been cherished by the family. She also published three children’s books with the help of her good friend and companion, Ed. She eventually moved to Gateway Manor in Teulon and made many good friends there, and then spent her final months in Betel Care Home in Selkirk.
Ever the teacher, she continued to share her skills to the benefit of others and enjoyed working on her own life story and her needlework. Freida’s love of people and making friends lasted her whole life, and the family is deeply grateful to the many home care, hospital, and care home workers who shared a special connection with her in her later years. She lived a big life in a small town, and her loss will be felt across the community she loved, but her legacy will live on in the many lives she touched.
A memorial service will be held on Thursday, November 5th at 2pm at the Inwood Memorial Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hillside Memorial Garden in Inwood.

Like countless others, I’m blessed to have known Freida as a little kid and then later having the chance to excitedly introduce her to my own kids, because she was simply one of the best. Her legacy will continue in our memories and in her written works. My condolences to her family.

Throughout my life I have had many (many, many) teachers and I can say that Freida was the most gifted and caring one of all. Now that I am a teacher myself, I hold her in my heart as a role model, hoping to give my students a bit of everything she gave me.
