Murray Clair Ellison

Passed on

September 20, 1948 – July 25, 2024         Surrounded by the love of his family, Murray passed away on Thursday, July 25, 2024, at Stonewall Hospital.

Murray’s memory will be cherished forever by his loving wife of 49 years, Joan; his children Heather & Dan, Shannon & Sean, Kevin & Kirsten; his grandchildren Emma, Lily, Natalie, Liam, Lucas, Ada, and Blake. He is survived by his siblings Faye & Richard, Stephanie, Frankie, Lorraine, Linda, Shirley, Marilyn, Audrey & Bill, Ed & Donna, Glenn & Jan, Howard, as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

He is predeceased by his father, Victor Ellison, his mother, Marie Palen, his stepfather, Bill Palen, brothers Wayne, Dell, and Campbell Ellison, Jack Palen, and special Aunt Esther Campbell.

Murray met and soon married Joan Meads in 1975 from Stonewall, Manitoba, and together they raised a beautiful family in Gunton. He is a cherished Papa, who loved his grandchildren and grandpups fiercely. Murray was born in Teulon, Manitoba. He grew up on a small farm south of Teulon, and had a great love of animals, especially horses, and many fond memories from years in 4H. He fondly reminisced about his early working days surveying up north, and especially loved flying to remote locations. Later, he worked as a welder but had many different jobs over the years. He volunteered at the Gunton Hall Board and Teulon Museum and drove for Charison’s Turkey Hatchery and the Handivan in retirement.

Murray was a nature lover; he enjoyed camping, fishing, birdwatching, stargazing, and cross-country skiing. He inspired others through his scout leader days. Other favourite pastimes included reading and puzzling, as well as studying history, especially the history of the Interlake and his family ancestry. Music was a big part of his life from early childhood and he shared that passion with his family and friends. He curled in Balmoral for many years, loved watching sports, and was a dedicated Blue Bombers fan. Murray owned many classic muscle cars in his younger days, his favourite being his Plymouth Duster.

Murray was a dedicated father, Papa, and blessing to everyone in his life. His family is so grateful for the time they had with him.

A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 at 2 pm in the Gunton Community Hall.

Many special thanks to Dr. Kerr Graham for all of his care and support over the years. Thank you to all of the wonderful staff of the Stonewall Hospital, Home Care, and Palliative Care Program. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.

“So little snowbird, take me with you when you go to that land of gentle breezes where the peaceful waters flow.”
