Perrina (Perry) Gladys Kjartanson

Perrina (Perry) Gladys Kjartanson

Passed on April 28, 2020

(NEE SIGURGEIRSON) Aug. 18, 1937 – Apr. 28, 2020 While her daughters Candyce and Gae Lynn held her hands, Gladys left this earth for heaven and walked straight into the waiting arms of her beloved Ray and they are now waltzing together forever. Just like the day their dad passed it was raining which again seemed to honor their tears as they bid góða nótt to their Mom. Gladys was born August 18, 1937 on Hecla Island (Mikley) to first generation “Vestur Íslendingars” Helgi and Ingabjorg (Emma) Sigurgeirson. She was the “Baby” of the family and the last surviving sibling to Wilma, DeeDee, Binnie and Marge. She loved her Hecla home, but left briefly to attend Success Business College and then work at The Royal Trust in Winnipeg. She returned to the Island to marry Raymond Kjartanson on November 5th, 1960 where they raised two daughters until they moved to Winnipeg in 1966. She worked at the Hy-Line Credit Union for many years, loved her job as well as all the great lifelong friends and memories she made there. She and Ray spent their retirement summers travelling in their 5th wheel attending old time dances and fiddle festivals around Manitoba with their friends. She so enjoyed the time spent parking the trailer back at her childhood homestead just relaxing, going for boat rides with Ray around the Island and visiting with her brother Binnie. She was very proud of her Icelandic heritage and spoke the language her whole life. As a Mom and Amma we will deeply miss the “real” you before your spirit was stolen by the devastating alzheimer disease. It did not win! We will only remember your sweet and compassionate nature, great sense of humor, how you were always willing to listen, baker of the best Icelandic brown bread, your cute little Toodle-Loo farewells and your beautiful red hair! But above all, your love and pride for all of us. Mom loved music, it was a huge part of her entire life. Her last day we played the tunes of her favorite band, Johnny and his Musical Mates, as well as recordings of The Fine Country Folk, and the Riverton Hootenanny. Mom’s faith was very strong and as she left us, she was listening to one of her favorite Hymns – Rock of Ages. We know it helped in her final journey as her eyes actually fluttered during the last verse of the Hymn. Mom, it gives us great comfort to know you are with Dad now because you’ve heartbreakingly missed him the past 3 years. We miss you both and until we meet again, við elskum þig. Lovingly remembered by her daughters Candyce Paterson (Scott), Gae Lynn Labossiere (Bob), and granddaughters Meaghan McCullough (Adam) and Emma Labossiere (Brock Zimak) All those wishing to do so may make a donation in her honor to a charity of their choice. Gladys will be laid to rest beside her soul mate and best friend Ray at the Hecla cemetery. Celebration of life and internment to be announced at a later date.

My sincere condolences to the family on the passing of Gladys. I knew Gladys and Ray from playing at many old time dances and it was always so wonderful to see them and have a little visit. Both were such lovely people, and I smile knowing they are now reunited on that eternal dance floor.
