Linda Furness (Matheson)

Linda passed peacefully into her next life on March 13, 2024 at Rosewood Lodge in Stonewall. She was born on January 12, 1919 on the family farm at Grassmere to Arthur and Mysie Matheson.

Mom was the last of her generation of 18 Matheson cousins and at 105 years she had many wonderful and interesting memories of the last century. We feel truly blessed to have been able to share those extra years of her life. Her mind and recollection of history remained very strong.

Mom attended Tecumseh school and then went on to graduate from Stonewall Collegiate first in her class. She was called upon to nurse her Dad and then her Aunt Annie for a number of years and then she went to business college and worked for a few years before she married our Dad, Gordon Furness in 1948. She and Dad took over the family farm in 1954 which had been homesteaded by her grandfather Alexander Matheson in 1873. The family celebrated 150 years of continuous family farming on the homestead last summer and Mom was in attendance.

Mom was involved in her community. Grassmere United Church, Tecumseh School, Ladies Aid, United Church Women, Rockwood Horticultural Society, Stonewall Hospital Auxiliary, 4-H, all benefited from her volunteerism. She was also a member of The Lord Selkirk Association of Rupert’s Land and was very knowledgeable about the rich family history and the family’s Scottish roots. She was a dedicated visitor to those who might have been shut in or to her friends.

Mom and Dad enjoyed winters away in the south for a number of years. Gordon passed away in 1987 and after his passing Mom took a trip to England to visit his family who she had corresponded with for forty years but whom she had never met. She moved to Lions Manor in Stonewall in 2004 and lived there independently until her 101st year when a fall left her with a broken neck that resulted in a lengthy hospital stay and her eventual move to Rosewood Personal Care in Stonewall. She bore this change with an amazing stoic resolve and never complained about her situation. She was grateful for her long, full life and she was sustained by her strong faith.

She was much loved by her three daughters, Phyllis (Doug Fraser), Patricia (Rod Harris) and Judy (Kevin Cosens) and their children, Aaron Lowe (Laura), Jordan Lowe (Angela), Josh Lowe, Jenna (Matt Molitowsky), Brett Harris (Kelly), Lauren (Chad Wiebe), Carmen (Chad Rempel) and Sloane Cosens and fourteen great-grandchildren, Braden, Beckum, Brixtyn, Elliott, Callan, Levi, Lily, Penny, Sully, Rocco, Jack, Arie, Boston and Cohen. Besides her husband she was predeceased by her parents Arthur and Mysie Matheson and her sister, Marion McCoy and brother-in-law Bob McCoy, and her brother-in-law, Walter Furness and his wife Lillian.

The family would like to thank the many wonderful staff who so kindly cared for her at Rosewood Personal Care and before that at Stonewall and Teulon Hospitals. Your kindness was very much appreciated, especially in the last few weeks.

Funeral will be held at Stonewall United Church on Saturday, March 23rd at 11:00 a.m. with a lunch to follow.

Flowers are gratefully declined. Those wishing to do so may wish to remember Linda through a charity of your choice.

Martha Charison

November 24, 1925 – February 12, 2024        After a life well lived, Ellen Martha Charison passed away peacefully at her home in Teulon on February 12, 2024 at the age of 98. She was born on November 24, 1925, in Balmoral, Manitoba, to Florence and George Smaldon.

She is survived by her daughters Linda (Bun) Baxter, Shelley Eros (Ron Branconnier), Candy (Herb) Laszchuk, Kathy Cockerill (Doug Bottrell), and son-in-law Frank Dziedzic. Grandchildren: Keith Baxter, Karl (Sapphira) Baxter, Dana (Walter) Stewart, Darci (Ken) Loehmer, Scott Eros, Dusty Laszchuk, Carmen Laszchuk, Aaron (Chelsea) Cockerill and Cherise Griffin. Great grandchildren: Duncan, Desiree, Cameron, Dominic, Tiffany, Ella, Alexa, Harper, Hudson and Addison.

Preceding her in death were her husband Alex Charison in 1992; daughter Diane Dziedzic; sons-in-law Glenn Cockerill and Craig Eros; grandsons Bobby, Kory, Kyle and Kevin; siblings Howard, Billy, Edna, Bobby, Violet and Harold; lifelong friends Lillian Furness, Edna Tarrant and Shirley Jeske.

Martha lived life to the fullest, embodying a spirit of adventure and determination. She earned her pilot’s license in 1980 at the age of 55, a testament to her adventurous nature. In her later years, Martha found joy in gardening, planting an impressive 1500 gladioli by herself at the age of 75.

She was supportive of the family’s turkey business and was so proud when Alex and Stan were recognized as Farmer of the Year in 1990, a well-deserved honour for their dedication and hard work. She loved visiting customers with Alex, turkey conventions, delivering poults and hosting customers in their home.

Martha’s adventurous spirit took her to far-flung destinations, with Switzerland in 1979 being just the beginning. Texas, Hawaii, Australia, and a fantastic world cruise with her sister Edna in 1994. She cherished her winter home in Deerfield Beach, Florida, where they enjoyed the sunshine and golf.

Martha embraced life with gusto, indulging in hobbies like bowling, golfing, fishing, and curling. She even installed an inground pool in 1973, despite not being able to swim herself, ensuring her children and countless others learned this essential skill. As a family they enjoyed many good fishing trips up to Dauphin River where they became very good friends with the camp owners family – the Letander’s. She also loved visiting with her Hutterite friends.

Despite her many adventures, Martha’s greatest joy was found in the simple moments spent with her family. She was a fixture at her grandchildren’s games and concerts. One of her proudest moments was seeing her grandson Aaron golfing on TV for the first time.

Martha was able to live independently her entire 98 years. She knew she could count on “old faithful” every week to take her out for lunch and shopping. Known for her colorful language and feisty disposition, Martha had a knack for keeping those around her on their toes. Her quick wit and irreverent humor endeared her to all who knew her, leaving behind a legacy of joy and laughter.

Martha had an unwavering passion for animals and their well being. Donations in her memory can be made to Grateful Friends Animal Rescue, Box 999, Teulon, MB, R0C 3B0.

She said my place was ready in Heaven far above, and that I’d have to leave behind all those that I dearly love. So when tomorrow starts without me, don’t think we’re far apart, for every time you think of me, I’m right here in your heart.”

Yvonne Alice Cruise (nee Bale)

Surrounded by love, Yvonne Alice Cruise (née Bale) peacefully passed away on January 25, 2024.

Yvonne is survived by her husband, Jack, of 49 years, her children Shawn (Nicole), Dennis (Cindy), and Kelly (Jack), as well as her six beloved grandchildren: Abigail, William, Joseph, Grayson, Channing, and Logan. She is also survived by her and Jack’s numerous siblings and their families.

Yvonne’s sister, Louise Jones, sister-in-law, Sharon Cruise, daughter-in-law, Nicole Merrick, and niece, Erin Skrabyk, were dearly loved by Yvonne. We are forever grateful to them for their unwavering love and constant support shown to Yvonne throughout the years.

Born on July 3, 1953, to Ernest and Angelique Bale in the town of Fisher Branch, Yvonne was the second oldest of nine children. From her younger years, she fondly recalled trips to Winnipeg with her grandfather, engaging in shenanigans with her siblings, and her mother yelling to her father: “Ernest, put your foot down!”

In May 1974, Yvonne married Jack and moved to the farm in Chatfield, where she devoted herself as a wife and mother. Her training as a hairdresser came in handy on the farm, with a constant stream of kids and cousins in need of a trim. Yvonne tolerated cooking, loved gardening and flowers, was an avid bird watcher, and had a passion for healthy living. She could always be found on the road to 4-H, at the rink during her sons Shawn and Dennis’ hockey years, and supporting her daughter Kelly in her favorite activities. Her six grandchildren held a special place in her heart, and she was always there to listen to the goings-on in life and at school, being the first to provide advice and encouragement.

In her later years, Yvonne resided at Goodwin Lodge and actively participated in various activities. A fun partner in crime, she was always ready for a shopping trip, dinner, a movie, or a game of Bingo.

While Yvonne had a critical illness for much of her life, it never defined her, and she lived her life with gratitude and grace, focusing on peace and positivity. Yvonne embraced life with laughter, never dwelling on the negative or challenges that came her way. She harbored no judgment, exuding kindness to everyone around her, always quick to share a smile or have a laugh. Yvonne loved music and was always humming a tune whenever and wherever music was found. She was unique, and it was impossible not to love her.

We extend our heartfelt gratitude to Goodwin Lodge, the nursing staff, and Dr. Loudon for their exceptional friendship and care during Yvonne’s time there.

She will be profoundly missed.

Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, February 13, 2024 at 1:00 pm. at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Fisher Branch, MB. Lunch will follow at Chatfield Community Hall.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that you consider making a donation to MS Canada in honor of Yvonne’s memory. Contributions can be made online at https://mscanada.ca/. Your generosity will support ongoing efforts to enhance the lives of those affected by Multiple Sclerosis.
