July 26, 1942 – September 25, 2019 After a lengthy hard fought battle with myelofibrosis, it is with profound sadness we announce Mom’s graduation from life in the early morning hours of Wednesday, September 25, 2019. Predeceased by her life partner Harry, mom is survived by her children Cal (Cindy), Greg (Corinne), grandchildren Taylor and Cole, Sarah (Zea), Bethany, Rebecca; great grandchildren Ava and Brody, grand dog Wiley, sisters Linda (Larry), Joanne, Denise (Keith); in-laws Bill, Netti (Bill), Jack (Mildred); numerous nieces and nephews and extended family Josie and Mickey Chernicki. Mom was born in Regina, Saskatchewan July 26, 1942, moved to various bases in her early years with her family as an “army brat”. Mom attended high school in Winnipeg and later met the love of her life Harry. Viv and Harry married October 15, 1960 and started their family 2 years later. Being the wife of someone in the agriculture business, the family moved around a lot, eventually settling in Stonewall for 21 years, to retire in Teulon, then the last couple of years residing at Hilltop Manor in Stony Mountain. Throughout her life she loved to practise her culinary skills baking cakes and cookies to making fresh bread and borsht. Mom and good friend Joyce Conrad eventually joined forces and took on a few business ventures where they developed friendships at U of W, Claude Neon, Kinsmen Lake and Stony Mountain Curling Club. Family was everything to mom. She was your strongest advocate in good times and during times of great challenge. We will all miss her being in our corner no matter what. Our sincere thank you to Sharon and all staff at Stonewall Hospital and District Health Centre. You all held a very special place in Mom’s heart. We will never forget the care provided to her over the last couple of years. To the staff on Purple Bear GA – 4 thank you for the exceptional care provided over the last 2 weeks of her life. Dr. Ponnampalam and Kerry, thank you for the many years of taking care of mom – she thought so much of you. Dr. Graham and Dr. Zahiri (known to mom as Dr. Handsome) thank you for your compassion and care over the last couple of years. A private interment is to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba or Stonewall Hospital Foundation.

Doreen MacNaughton
(Thornton, Carry) Surrounded by family in a room full of love, Doreen passed peacefully on September 21, 2019. She will be deeply missed by the love of her life, Bob, children: Karen (Mike), Daryl (Diana) and Darcy (Paul), grandchildren: Wren (Keragh), Michelle (Jay), Christopher, Corey, Dayner (Inga) and Jazlee. Also missing her deeply are her great grandchildren: James, Sean and Bella, brother Jim (Lorraine), sister Shirley, sister–in-law Gay, cousin Diane and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was such an important part in the lives of so many. Mom worked hard all her life in the restaurant industry while raising her 3 children. In 1993, she and Bob bought the hotel in Inwood, Manitoba opening up a whole new chapter in their lives. It seems that everyone in the Interlake knew and loved her. Our mom was an amazing woman, kind, generous, thoughtful, loving, vibrant, energetic, fun loving and the life of any party but the thing she was best at was being a mom, grandma and great grandma. Mom and Bob always wanted their family around and the grand and great grandchildren thought of Gramma and Papa’s house as their second home. We all have the most wonderful memories of her. Mom taught us to be strong and we will be during this most difficult of times. We have lost such a wonderful woman and heaven has gained such a beautiful angel. As per her wishes, there will be no formal funeral, just a small family gathering at a later date. Thank you to everyone for all the love and laughter you have given and shared with our mom throughout the years We love you Mom/Doreen and will hold you in our hearts forever.

Mom was born at the Stonewall Hospital on February 4, 1959. She attended elementary school in Balmoral and high school in Stonewall where she met our Dad, Dale. Mom and Dad were married on September 13, 1980. After living in Stony Mountain for 10 years they settled in Balmoral at their current residence in October of 1990. This is where we were raised and now where her 4 grandchildren will continue to make more memories and be constantly be reminded of their Grandma. Mom spent our early years being a stay-at-home mom and then started working at Ducks Unlimited Canada where she worked for 20 years and made many lifelong friends. She was very involved and very proud to be on the Harlequins and multiple other fundraising committees for Ducks. Mom shared her love of curling, line dancing, and country music with us. We spent many a morning dancing around the living room with her. As we grew older, our friends started calling her Mom or Mama Baker and she always made sure there was extra food at the table just in case someone dropped in. She frequently referred to our friends as her other children and was proud of all of them. Mom was also very proud of all of her nieces and nephews and was so close to them that even their friends also called her Auntie Lorna. We would like to send a huge thank you to Roberta’s Medicine Family and Dr. Alexander at the SRHC who went above and beyond and took such amazing care of her in her final week. Also to Dr. Loudon, Marcia at CancerNav, and to everyone who has helped with the grandkids, our dogs and helped keep Mom’s life as comfortable and positive as possible.
