Betty Irene Sorenson

March 30, 1933 – September 25, 2023      It is with heartfelt sorrow we announce the passing of Betty Irene Sorenson. Mom passed away peacefully on September 25, 2023 at the age of 90. Our loss here on earth is our family angels’ gain.

Mom was born on March 30, 1933 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In her earlier years, Mom loved to play baseball. Through baseball, she met Dad. She married Jim Sorenson on August 18th, 1951 and for most of their life resided on the family farm in Marquette, MB. Mom is predeceased by her husband Jim, parents Charlie and Tot Tully, William and Grace Sorenson, son Terry, granddaughter Kimberley Seggie and grandson Michael Seggie. Left to forever remember her are her children Ronald/Ted (Gail), Shirley (Jim), Elaine, Karen, Diane (Blair) and daughter-in-law Cheryl (Rob), grandchildren Stacy (Darren), Brent (Michelle), Michelle, Nicholas (Baila), Christopher (Morgan), Lindsay, Ashley, Zach, Chloe, Tyler (Dara), and great grandchildren Cody, Blake, Carson, Stella, Olivia and Victoria. Mom will be lovingly missed by many extended family members, friends, and neighbours.

Throughout her 90 years here on Earth, Mom worked very hard and instilled that work ethic into all of us. Whether it was working on the farm while raising us, taking an off the farm job to work at Bristol Aerospace or volunteering in the community, Mom stayed active and busy. Through her volunteering as a 4H leader, cooking at the Woodlands Seniors’ Lodge and assisting with the Woodland’s Adult Day Program, she met many friends and acquaintances. Mom, being a long-time member of the Woodlands Pioneer Museum Board, The Meadow Lea United Church and the Meadow Lea Hall, became a pillar of the community.

In her spare time, Mom loved to knit, crochet, embroider and sew. She enjoyed reading, coloring, puzzles, crosswords and wordsearch puzzles and more recently, diamond art. Mom spent her evenings content working on one of her many hobbies. Mom enjoyed old time dances and occasionally got away to travel. Some of her memorable trips were a road trip to Alaska, multiple trips to Vancouver Island, getting away to Nova Scotia and a bus tour to the East Coast.

Mom enjoyed her weekly visits to the local café where many friends and family would join her. Mom also enjoyed visiting many friends at the Lodge in Woodlands. Probably her greatest joy was when the grandchildren and great grandchildren would come to visit. There was always a counter full of home baked goodies and the treat cupboard was always stocked awaiting their arrival.

The family would like to thank Dr. Hicks and the nurses, health care aids and hospital staff at the Stonewall Hospital for the excellent care they provided Mom over the last 10 weeks.

In lieu of flowers a donation can be made in Mom’s memory to the Meadow Lea United Church, South West District Palliative Care, CancerCare or a charity of your choice.

A celebration of life will be held at Meadow Lea Hall on Monday, October 16, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. with a private interment to take place.

H. Alvin Penner

Peacefully on September 20, 2023 at the Selkirk Regional Health Centre, Alvin Penner beloved husband of Shirley Patton Penner. Alvin was the youngest child of Nickolas and Agatha Penner. He was predeceased by sisters Margaret, Helen and Selma and his brother Nickolas and his brothers of the heart Hank, Johnny and Herbie. He is also survived by daughter Shanne and her three children and many nieces and nephews.

For 83 years Alvin has lived in the same house on the family farm. He was born to a farmer and in July of 1974 Alvin married a farmer’s daughter Shirley. One of his earliest memories was sitting in an apple box on the tractor with his Dad. Alvin graduated from the University of Manitoba with a Diploma in Agriculture and began his farming career in earnest. For a period of time, he raised pigs but he realized they were not for him and he realized anything that ate hay was also not for him. He had enough of moving hay when he was young – grain farming was it. Alvin loved the whole process of farming, the seeding, watching Shirley do the harrow work, spraying and combining. The very best though was the harvest meals in the field and crop tours checking for weeds or bugs. In the seventies and early eighties he combined with the Cottingham brothers Bob and Glen and his son Greg. Drying grain all night was no fun- hauling it to the elevator sure was. When it was deep till he was up at 4 am “to get a good start in the field” He loved his job!

Alvin loved dogs and he always said he was lucky to have had so many great dogs and that they were so intelligent; Skeeter, Herman, Auggie Doggie (alias the Red Baron) the skidoo rider. They could be seen flying along Hwy 8 with her red scarf flying in the wind. Then came Waggs, Jackum and lastly our beloved Bear. Alvin always took the time to play with them no matter the time of day he came home.

The travel bug bit early on in life and he was happiest tooling down the interstate sipping on a cool one heading for a warm spot down south. He loved the desert and over the years he had many companions – Lyle, Bert, Herbie, Johnnie, Glen, Irvin, Randy and Mike all made memories. Great memories of having beer with Patsy Cline and June Carter at Rose’s Dance Garden in Pismo Beach, California. He met and had a long visit with Willie Nelson and watched Herbie jam with the Beach Boys.

Alvin loved music, Saturday was the George Jones day. His Jones’er were legendary full of good food, assorted beverages and everyone welcome. Sunday it was gospel music and he had it wired into the garage and the gazebo.

In 1998 the garage was built and filled with Route 66 mementos, neon signs, old tools and anything that took his fancy. He could often be found studying his Rand McNally Atlas planning the next trip. Music on the stereo and the BBQ heating up for a steak. Alvin was always ready for a road trip.

Alvin was extremely proud of Shirley’s cooking and how she maintained a beautiful yard. He loved every flower as long as it was yellow or orange. In the later years he had very successful garden. Early in the morning you could see him head out to the garden with his dog and two or three cats to weed. In the afternoon he could be found napping in the gazebo with his dog, two or three cats and the stereo playing.

In February of 1990 Alvin was honored when he and Shirley were awarded the commission of Kentucky Colonel. He took great delight when the invitation to the Kentucky Derby and its many functions arrived. It was on his bucket list of things yet to be done. A series of health issues made the dream impossible. Alvin lived everyday of his 83 years to the fullest with no regrets.

In lieu of flowers please consider donations to Dunara Community Church, Box 507 RR#1 Petersfield, MB., R0C 2L0 or Siloam Mission, 300 Princess Street, Winnipeg, MB, R3B 1M3.

Brian Roy Roche

1938 – 2023   It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Brian Roche, age 84, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend on September 11, 2023 at the Stonewall Hospital. Brian was born December 24th, 1938 and lived his entire life on the family farm at 27-11-2E in the R.M. of Rosser.

His family, farm life and his trucking business were the mainstays of his life. Brian was predeceased by his father, Roy (1979), mother Gladys (2010). Surviving members are his beloved wife of 63 years, Jeanette; son Wayne (Karen) and Wayne’s children Cyndle-Lee (Nicholas, great grandchildren Natalee & Madeline); Janelle (Paul) and Karsey (Derek and great granddaughter Scarlet); son Bruce (Jaylene) and grandsons Max and Spencer; brother Ron (Pat); sister Diane Blue (Ben) and their families along with other extended family who held a special place in his life.

Brian attended Little Mountain and Cecil Rhodes schools. He left school at age 16 and joined his father Roy and his Uncle Jim Davis on the farm. Brian was very proud that six generations of Roche’s have and are living on the family farm. He combined his farming life with his love for trucking. He became an owner/operator with Gardewine and Sons and for some 36 years travelled north to Grand Rapids, Flin Flon, Thompson and on the winter roads. He eventually established his own business, Brian Roche Enterprises and became a well known grain and cattle hauler. He hauled grain for many local farmers forming lasting friendships in the process.

Brian was a dedicated and honored member of the Vintage Locomotive Society (The Prairie Dog Central Railway). In 1999 he was instrumental in providing the Prairie Dog Central Railway with a new home on Prairie Dog Trail. The move from the St. James Station ensued not long after this and it was all over a cup of coffee with an old friend at the Sun Valley Restaurant. The end result was keeping an historic piece of history alive. Brian was also a longtime member of the Rocklands Antique club and the Turtle Mountain Fly Wheel Club in Killarney. He attended many fairs and parades over the years with his beautifully restored antique Farmall Tractors. When a club held a fundraiser one could always rely on Brian to gather the merchandise for the silent auctions.

Brian was a thoughtful and caring person who enjoyed being around family and friends. He and Jeanette hosted many family gatherings over the years. With the presence of his signature trademark the “toothpick” in its usual place, Brian made sure the tables were exactly where he wanted them to be and Jeanette followed up with delicious food. He was generous with his time and efforts and never hesitated to help a friend in need. The last five years proved difficult for Brian. As his health deteriorated so did his spirit. His family will endeavor to live up to the legacy he has left with us.

Sincere thanks to the home care workers and the medical staff at Stonewall Hospital for the care provided to Brian.

A family graveside service will take place at Chapel Lawn on Monday, September 18 at 3 pm where Brian will be laid to rest next to his parents.

Honorary Pallbearers: Barry Davis, Ben Blue, Dennis Elchuk, Cyndle-Lee Anderson, Janelle Roche and Karsey Reid. Pallbearers: Max Roche, Spencer Roche, John Eichel, Bob Sigfusson, Blair Shabaga and Adrian Shabaga. Rev. Mona Denton will officiate.

A “Celebration of Life” will be held Friday, September 22, 2023, 1 to 5 pm at Little Mountain Sportsplex 64-128 Klimpke Road with words of remembrance at 2 pm.

In lieu of flowers donations can be forwarded to The Prairie Dog Central Railway, P.O. Box 33021, RPO Polo Park Winnipeg, R3G 3N4 or Lilyfield United Church c/o Box 22 R.R.2, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 2E6.

Ronald Ivan Jaremy

July 10, 1941 – September 9, 2023         We are sad to announce the passing of Ron Jaremy on the evening of Saturday, September 9 at the Deer Lodge Centre with his wife Donna and daughter Shannon at his side.

Ron was born in Vita, MB but most of his youth was spent in Chatfield, MB where his parents owned and operated the Chatfield Creamery. He attended Spruce View School then boarded at the United Church Boy’s Home in Teulon where he completed high school. He received a diploma in dairying from the University of Manitoba, then returned to work in the family business, earning provincial and national awards for his butter.

Ron and Donna were married on July 30, 1966, in Dauphin, MB. They made Chatfield their home and in the following years Shannon and Kelly were born.

In 1976 Ron began working for Macleod’s in Teulon so the family moved house and contents to their new hometown. Approximately nine years later he began working at Charison’s Turkey Hatchery in Gunton.

In 1995 a major heart attack and the onset of diabetes resulted in his decision to semi-retire. They moved to Ochre River, then Ste. Rose and finally to his “happy Place” the cottage at Christensen Beach. He suffered increasing medical issues so they moved to an apartment in Winnipeg in November of 2020 during COVID where he could be closer to the medical services he needed. He greatly missed being able to watch the birds and animals from the deck at the cabin.

Ron had many interests. He read the daily paper and kept a good supply of books, especially those by Louis Lamour and John Grisham. He enjoyed gardening and yard work, as well as fishing and hunting. There was nothing he liked better than having friends visit and play cards. A lot of trips were made with family and friends across Canada, the U.S.A. and Europe where at the end of each day the men would have “coffee” and they all would play cards.

Following full retirement Ron & Donna travelled more often. At least two weeks were set aside in the coldest part of winter to go with Shannon & Mel to some of their favorite hot spots in Mexico or the Caribbean. They travelled throughout Southern Germany and Austria with the Jeske’s. They also took bus tours of Great Britain and China. To celebrate their 50th anniversary they cruised the Mediterranean Sea.

Ron began playing tournament baseball with the senior men by the age of 15. For many years he played short stop and was a relief pitcher but later on he mainly played right field. Throughout his career he was a strong hitter. He was a member of the Chatfield Cardinal team 1952-1959 inducted into the Manitoba Baseball Hall of Fame in 2003. He played for the Balmoral Orioles, Teulon Whips (Senior B Champs 1974) and Teulon Cardinals (Senior A Western Canadian Champs 1975).

In the 1980’s Ron began umping all ages, levels and different types of ball throughout the province; this included umping a Winnipeg Goldeyes game.

Ron will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 57 years, Donna, his daughter Shannon and her husband, Mel Harder, as well as Mel’s sons Nick (wife Kat and son Darwin) and Josh.

Also cherishing the many memories of Ron at family gatherings and celebrations are: His brother Taras(Ingun) Jaremy, father-in-law Donald McKinnon, Aunt Eileen Probizanski, sister-in-law Doreen Swift, brother-in-law Karl(Dianne) McKinnon, niece Karmel(Johannes) Olafson, nephew Reid Jaremy, nephew Max Jaremy(partner Carrie and her daughter Isabella), nephew Andrei Jaremy(Jamee and sons Alexander, Harmon & Shepherd), nephew Ian McKinnon(Carrie and sons Lochlyn and Rhys), nephew Kris McKinnon(Sarah, son Kole and daughter Jordyn),niece Leigh McKinnon, as well as all the Probizanski, Zuk and Tretiak cousins.

Ron had countless friends who stayed in touch and visited him over most of his lifetime. We wish all of them to consider themselves honorary pall bearers. You have always provided tremendous support to the family.

Ron was predeceased by his beloved daughter Kelly, his parents John and Dorothy (Probizanski) Jaremy, his brothers Ted and Dan Jaremy, his niece Heidi Jaremy and his mother-in-law Virginia (Christensen) McKinnon.

The family wishes to express its gratitude to the many people who supported Ron. A special thank you to Dr. Kerr Graham who was Ron’s primary care doctor for almost 30 years.

Our appreciation goes out to the many doctors, nurses and health care workers throughout Manitoba who made it possible for him to remain at home for as long as he did.

Our thanks to the home care nurses and aides who assisted him. Your unwavering support during COVID will never be forgotten.

We will be forever grateful to the wonderful staff at Deer Lodge Centre for their support, patience and excellent care.

The graveside service for Ronald Jaremy will be held on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at 12:00 in the Windsor Cemetery.

No flowers please. Please consider donating to a worthy cause or doing a favour for someone in need.
